When I moved into a rented house in Bristol, there was a jumbled magnetic poetry set stuck on the front of the fridge and hot water boiler. Most of the words seemed to be American urban slang that I found nearly incomprehensible. In idle moments, I started to arrange the words into more-or-less coherent sentences. I found this challenging because I didn't understand a lot of the idioms, so I had to guess at the meanings or use phrases in their literal sense.
I thought it would be fun to preserve this ephemera for posterity, so I created this faithful replica. I admit that goes against the spirit of the toy, which is that the magnets should periodically be rearranged. However, some of these phrases have become part of my mental landscape. I am particularly fond of the surreal and pathetic final couplet: "Used ta live for Mary Jane but she ice-cold. Gonna step off her steel fridge".
I added links to the Urban Dictionary in an attempt at clarification, but discovered that I had been wrong about a lot of the meanings. For example, I didn't know that 'Mary Jane' is slang for marijuana, or that 'up north trip' means being sent to jail. So if you splice the Urban Dictionary definitions into my sentences, then the result will often be nonsense!
